Background: Oral hygiene is of paramount importance for the preservation of oral health, and for patients affected by\nperiodontal disease establishing an effective oral hygiene routine is the first step of therapy. Several clinical frameworks\nhave been developed to foster behavior change, such as motivational interviewing. However, two obstacles can be\nidentified. First, patients tend to forget the advice they were given during the consultation. Second, it is hard to\nmaintain motivation in the long term, thus leading to relapse. An innovative eHealth solution was designed with the\naim to tackle both obstacles and supplement the current clinical standard of care. The primary objective is to compare\nthe full mouth plaque scores of study groups (eHealth plus standard of care versus standard of care only) at 8 weeks of\nfollow up. The main secondary objective is to compare the full mouth bleeding score at 8 weeks of follow up.\nMethods/design: The â??GoPerioâ? study is a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial assessing the impact of a novel\neHealth concept for oral hygiene motivation (personalized video of oral hygiene routine available for the patient via a\ncloud server plus interactive text messages) in addition to the current standard of care (motivational interviewing plus\ntooth scaling and polishing). The minimum sample size required is 86 patients. Participants will be randomized (allocation\nratio 1:1): test group (eHealth plus standard of care) versus control group (standard of care only). The primary outcome is\noral hygiene as measured by the full mouth (six sites per tooth) plaque control record (PCR) index. The main secondary\noutcome is gingival inflammation as measured by the full mouth (six sites per tooth) bleeding on probing (BOP) index.\nBoth the primary and the main secondary outcomes are evaluated by blinded and calibrated examiners at 8 weeks of\nfollow up. The other secondary outcomes are patient satisfaction and patient behavior change and motivation.\nDiscussion: The study will investigate the value of an innovative eHealth approach to strengthen patient motivation for\noral hygiene. If proven effective, such an approach would supplement the current clinical standard of care, resulting in\nimproved clinical outcomes with negligible impact on productivity in a dental practice....
Purpose. In relation to this research, only a few studies have been carried out around the world. However, in Saudi Arabia, there\nhave been no investigations into this subject. In this sense, the objective of this study was to investigate the physiciansâ?? attitudes\ntowards the use of social media for professional purposes in Saudi Arabia. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted among\n235 physicians from different regions of Saudi Arabia. The data were collected by means of a survey. The survey questionnaire was\ndistributed using the WhatsApp application. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the results. Results. The most common\nsocial media used by the respondents was Facebook, and the majority of the participants agreed that social media improved their\nknowledge and skills. However, most of the participants did not interact with patients using these tools, did not feel comfortable\nconducting an online consultation, and believed that social media affected the choice of the healthcare provider. Similarly, 30.6%\nof the respondents opined that it is not appropriate to search online information about patients, and 44.3% of them considered that\npatients would not trust the medical advice if a physician obtained the information from a website. Conclusion. The results showed\nthat the majority of the respondents considered that social media improved the knowledge and abilities of physicians. In addition, the\nrespondents reflected that there were ethical issues that must be taken into account when using social media and more than half of\nthem did not interact with their patients employing these tools. The outcomes of this research will help to develop programs directed\nat the physicians in Saudi Arabia to enhance their knowledge, professional skills, medicine practice, patient-doctor interaction, and\nhandle the risks involved in the use of social media....
This paper presents a design and prototype of an IoT-based health and safety monitoring\nsystem using MATLAB GUI. This system, which is called the Smart Health and Safety Monitoring\nSystem, is aimed at reducing the time, cost and manpower requirements of distributed workplaces.\nThe proposed system is a real-time control and monitoring system that can access on-line the status\nof consumable devices in the workplace via the internet and prioritise the critically high location that\nneed replenishing. The system dynamically updates the status of all location, such as first aid boxes,\nearplug dispensers and fire extinguishers. Background: Telehealth is growing and its application in palliative care is seen as a solution to pressures on\npalliative care services. A 2010 UK review reported growing awareness of telehealth in palliative care but a lack of\nevidence-based research to support its use. The primary aim of this review was to describe the current use of\ntelehealth in palliative care in the UK and evaluate telehealth initiatives against a digital service standard. The\nsecondary aim was to explore whether telehealth results in a reduction in emergency care access.\nMethods: Systematic review of the literature with thematic synthesis. Records were screened and data extracted by\ntwo reviewers. EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Psychinfo and Cochrane central register for controlled trials were\nsearched using pre-defined terms. Hand searching of conference literature, thesis databases and citation tracking\nwas also conducted. The protocol for this systematic review was registered with PROSPERO and can be found at\nhttp://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/display_record.php?ID=CRD42017080038.\nResults: The search identified 3807 titles and 30 studies were included in the review. Telehealth was used to\nsupport patients and carers, electronic record keeping and professional education. Notably, the number of home\ntelemonitoring initiatives for patients had increased from the 2010 review. Despite this variety, many studies were\nsmall scale, descriptive and provided little evidence of evaluation of the service. Ten papers were sufficiently\ndetailed to allow appraisal against the digital service standard and only one of these met all of the criteria to some\nextent. Seven studies made reference to emergency care access.\nConclusions: Although there is growth of telehealth services, there remains a lack of evaluation and robust study\ndesign meaning conclusions regarding the clinical application of telehealth in palliative care cannot be drawn.\nThere is insufficient evidence to appreciate any benefit of telehealth on access to emergency care. Future work is\nneeded to evaluate the use of telehealth in palliative care and improve telehealth design in line with digital service\nstandards....
